ScreenDepthINIT is a system extension. It allows you to change quickly the number of colors your monitors display without having to find, open, use and close the Monitors control panel. You can display at any time a pop-up menu showing the available screen depths simply by pressing the control key and the mouse button. Under system 7.0, the balloon help will remind you of this.
ScreenDepthINIT was written for system 7.0 and uses two traps described in InsideMac vol. VI, HasDepth and SetDepth. However, I discovered that these traps were also available under system 6.0.7. I haven't tested older versions.
If these two traps are unavailable or if you don't have in your configuration a monitor with more than one possible screen depth (in that case, ScreenDepthINIT is useless), the INIT will simply not install itself at boot time.
